We had the honor of participating in Alex's 18th birthday celebration. On her 18th birthday, a Filipino girl customarily throws a large party, similar to quinceañera complete with her own hand-picked entourage of 18 individuals. These individuals present a rose and dance briefly with her. The sole purpose of the 18 Roses Dance is to honor the men who have been influencial in her life. This includes grandfathers, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
Alex and her father also shared a special dance to the song "I Get To Love You" which we performed with Matthew on piano. Later in the evening, Alex also had 18 "candles" presented by female friends or relations. Each delivers a short speech about her relationship with the celebrant and any special greeting, and lights a candle.
We were unfamiliar with the elements of a debut and were enlightened by the manner in which family and relationships were incorporated into this celebration. Congratulations to Alex on her 18th birthday and best wishes for her future.
